Morale: After 22 attempts to pass English competency tests, God finally answered my prayers. I am writing this note to encourage someone out there who might be facing some conundrums in life. Please stay positive and keep pushing. The same God who did great and mighty things in the past is still on His throne doing wondrous things.
I have just completed my Bachelor of Nursing in Australia, and part of the requirements for me to be registered with the Nursing board is to attain a proficiency level of English Language. Because English is literally my favourite subject and my second language, I was confident that I will pass the exam easily. Unfortunately, God wanted to teach me an incredible lesson.
"No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
God finally proved to me that He is the only one who can give success without stress.
I started with IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System) which I did well in the speaking and listening aspects but reading and writing were just 0.5 points below the required band score. I continued giving this exam, which cost $340, more attempts without getting the desired score. So, I decided to try another English test - Occupational English Test (OET) which costs $590. I also did well in the Exam with a minuscule gap to attain my desired score. After some unsuccessful attempts, I
decided to try another exam Pearson Test of English - PTE. This is a computer-based exam.
PTE is popular because it has some tips and tricks that once you can give the computer what it requires, you will not only get a proficiency level but an expert level of 79+. Unfortunately for me, in my first attempt, I did well in all skills except the speaking part. The speaking part is, however, the most important part because it carries a huge score point. Moreover, there are two enabling skills that constitute the speaking score which is oral fluency and pronunciation. My pronunciation score was 10/90, which meant the computer didn't pick my voice at all. This was a huge disappointment for me because I had 8.5/9 in this same speaking when I did IELTS. I tried speaking like a lady, covered my nostrils, spoke loud, spoke softly, put emphasis on some words, yet my pronunciation did not change.
Anyway, I continued registering for these exams with prayers and fasting and incessant practice. I also attended two different tutorial centres, one in Parramatta where I paid $1,000 for 6 weeks class, and the other in the city where I paid $700 (Discounted price) for 4 weeks rigorous training on the tips and tricks. At one point, I began to lose hope, hence I decided to enrol for a one-year Diploma course. The Nursing board will register me if I have studied in Australia for 5 years. Since I have studied for 4 years, I decided to enrol to a year program in the City. I was asked to pay $6,000. Now, I began to pray and
recommit myself to God. I went into a covenant with God that if he will make me pass this exam, I will appreciate him in a different way.
Friends, after attempting PTE 9 times X $340, IELTS 9 times X $340 and OET 4 times X $590 (Total 22 times), on 8th of April 2019, God answered my prayers. I got my desired score with PTE. I am now a Registered Nurse. I give all the glory and adoration to God in whom I can do all things Philippians 4:13.
